The River of Words Project is an international contest designed to nurture respect and understanding of the natural world by encouraging children to learn their "ecological address" and to describe through poetry and art their own "place in space".
The project fosters responsibility, imagination, and action in young people and publicly acknowledges their creativity and concerns. A variety of classroom and field activities can be employed, and are explained to teachers in a teachers guide. The contest is open to children, ages 5 - 19, around the world.
Local awards for San Mateo County students.
The San Mateo Countywide Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (STOPPP) educates the public about the problem of pollution from stormwater runoff. Pollutants wash off streets during rains and enter storm drains that flow directly into creeks, streams, the ocean, and the Bay. This is the greatest source of pollution in the San Francisco Bay.
STOPPP is promoting this contest to San Mateo County students and is offering the following local awards:
$50 to two Art entriesAll entries will be forwarded on to the national River of Words office to qualify for the regional and national awards.
$50 to two Poetry entries
$25 gift certificates for up to four participating teachers
Deadline for STOPPP awards is December 4, 2000. Artwork cannot
be returned.
Send entries to: STOPPP, attn: Barbara Ebel, 1070 Sixth Avenue,
Suite 306, Belmont, CA 94002
